ORIUNDOS DE LA NOCHE
by JAVIER BALAGUER - Special Prize to Best Documentary Film

Best Documentary
Oriundos De La Noche

For thirty years the Dominican Republic lived through one of the most terrible dictatorships in the history of Latin America at the hands of Leonidas Trujillo.

This documentary demonstrates the struggle of three distinguished figures who fought against the dictatorship to restore freedom to the people; the politician and writer JUAN BOSCH, the national poet PEDRO MIR and the heroine and martyr MINERVA MIRABAL
.

LOSNINGEN / The Solution
by JAN-EJE FERLING - Special Prize to the Best Fiction Film

Best Fiction Film
The Solution

The film is built on a true story and filmed on its real locations. The old man, here called Anders, was a close friend of mine who was brutally evacuated from the city and his flat by his cynical property-owner. We filmed the café scene in the place where Anders was forced to sign the contract after having been offered a cup of coffee and a piece of cake. Sadly enough Anders died some years later from depression.

But basically the film is about fatherhood, a subject that often has been highlighted in my books and films. I think our parents, present or absent, having a crucial impact to our choices and values in life. I especially focus on insufficient relations and what consequences they might have. I do not analyse or define solutions for the humanity, but tell stories from my own and some other people's experiences.

The actor Hakan Wallbom that plays the main part, Anders, is educated at the Swedish university for acting in Stockholm and has appeared regularly on stage, at television and in Swedish film productions. Mr Wallbom was awarded in Paris last year for his splendid performance in the film. The actor Jonas Larsson, who plays the young arrogant tenant, was awarded in Granada for his main part in my film Tysta rop/Hidden despair, which also deals with the subject parenthood.

I am most grateful to my film team, the actors, the photographer Peter Klint and the Producer Assistant Mirjam Vöhrmann. They all the time found ways out to shoot our low budget film in three days, in snow storm and with only five hours of daylight. Wonderful, talented people that seldom get awards, but make things happen with joy, amazing patience and loyalty. Bless them!

We are all proud and grateful to the Jury of the Philadelphia Documentary & Fiction Festival for having awarded the film in category: Special Prize to the Best Fiction Film.

The Annual Program Without Frontiers Award at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival

The Mar del Plata International Film Festival celebrated its 23rd edition this month. From 6th to 16th November, the seaside city was home to the most relevant cinema event in Latin America. There was a great variety of sections to choose from, since the Retrospectives to the New Authors, homage?s to film schools, national film industries (such as Polish or Portuguese), and to great directors such as Jean-Claude Rousseau and Thomas Clay, to name a few.

But the accent was in the Competitions, where there was also a big variety. There were three sections for feature films: the International Competition, the Latin American Competition and the Argentine Competition.
The ultimate award of the Festival, the Astor de Oro, was given to the Japanese Still Walking, by Hirokazu Kore-eda, film included in the International Competition.

The short films also had their place: with the International Short Film Competition and the Argentine Short Film Competition. In this last section, the Annual Program Without Frontiers participated for the third year in a row, giving out an Award to the animation El Empleo, by Santiago 'Bou' Grasso. The Award included the Official Certificate, as well as the automatic inclusion of the film in the San Francisco Short Film Festival and the Festival du Cinéma de Paris. The Program also gave a Special Mention to El Grito, by Andres Denegri. These two films also received from the Festival's Official Jury the transfer to 35mm.

With a new date, new heading and a new direction, the Mar del Plata International Film Festival was, once again, the "cinema party" of the region. A great experience for us and for the organizers, who will surely learn from it to make the 24th edition even better. And we can't wait for next year.
