In Mamut Online Backup version 1, the encryption key was stored locally in a file on the user’s machine. Without this file it is not possible for anyone - including the technical staff at Mamut - to gain access to your data.
In Mamut Online Backup version 2 we are introducing the Mamut Key - an encryption key stored on the server for access to which you, the user, only need to remember the special password protecting the key. The level of security from Mamut Online Backup v.1 remains, since only the person with access to the Mamut Key can access the data. The advantage with a solution where the encryption key is stored on the server instead of locally, is that you no longer need to be afraid of losing your encryption key.
This change to the encryption key handling requires that you save your backup from scratch in version 2 when upgrading from version 1. During the transition-phase, you will receive access to twice the amount of your ordinary storage space to allow for setting up your new backup in version 2 before you un-install Mamut Online Backup version 1.
