Mamut Business Software with Microsoft® SQL Server®

Mamut Business Software uses Microsoft SQL Server as its database; a familiar and proven database technology which provides you with the highest level of security, reliability and scalability for your business critical applications. What’s more, we now support additional versions of the database platform, Microsoft SQL Server, read more below.

What is SQL Server?

SQL Server is a secure, reliable and scalable data platform for business critical applications, with comprehensive traceability and administrative tools. Mamut Business Software version 14 and newer supports 2005, 2008 and 2008 R2 versions, whereas Mamut Business Software version 12 only supports the 2005 version. Only the above versions of Microsoft SQL Server can be used as the database with Mamut Business Software.

As a new Mamut user, do I need to do anything?

When first installing version 14 of Mamut Business Software, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express edition will automatically be installed and configured for Mamut Business Software.

However, the Mamut installation wizard will provide you with the opportunity to override this if you already have a Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008/2008 R2 installed on your PC or network; that you wish to continue to use. Additional information can be found within the installation guide.

As an existing user of Mamut, am I required to do anything?

When updating to version 14 of Mamut Business Software, you are able to select if you would like to update to SQL 2008 R2 Express if you are using SQL 2005 Express; and can decide this during the installation process. This alternative can be found under the “Advanced” setting in the installation wizard. For you as a user of Mamut, it means that you are not required to do anything other than follow the Mamut installation wizard, unless you wish to use another version, of Microsoft SQL Server, than the Express edition which comes with Mamut. If you are using a version other than the SQL 2005 Express edition, the choice to update to 2008 R2 will not be available. You will need to manually update SQL Server 2005 once you have installed Mamut Business Software version 14. Please contact your SQL reseller for further information about updating an SQL Server.

Please note: Updating to version 14 of Mamut Business Software requires version 12 of Mamut Business Software to be installed. If you have version 11 or older, we ask you to please update to version 12 or to contact the Mamut Support Centre before updating to version 14 of Mamut Business Software.

Options with other versions of Microsoft SQL Server

Mamut Business Software is supplied with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition, which is a powerful database server which is distributed free of charge by Microsoft together with Mamut Business Software. Mamut Business Software may also be used with other, more powerful versions of Microsoft SQL Server. These offer a variety of other properties and advantages compared with the Express Edition, which installations with multiple users or very comprehensive databases will benefit from.

Limitations in SQL 2008 R2 Express include:

Max size of database: 10 GB per company database (4GM in 2005 Express) (Please note: documents/files saved in the Document Register in Mamut Business Software are not included in this figure)
Only 1 CPU/1 Core used for SQL Server
Only 1 GB RAM used for SQL Server

If you have needs that go beyond the limitations of the Express Edition of Microsoft SQL Server, it is recommended that you use the Workshop or Standard version of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. These versions offer many additional options for advanced database administration and database tools.

It is easy to change over from SQL Express to a more powerful version at a later date if the need should arise.
