What is SQL Server?
SQL Server is a secure, reliable and scalable data platform for business-critical applications, with comprehensive traceability and administrative tools. Mamut Business Software uses the Express Edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 as standard, but it is possible to use other versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
Only Microsoft SQL Server 2005 can be used as database with Mamut Business Software.
As a new or existing Mamut user, do I need to do anything?
When first installing or updating to version 12 of Mamut Business Software, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express edition will be automatically installed and configured for Mamut.
However the Mamut installation wizard will give you the opportunity to override this if you already have a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 installed on your PC or network, which you wish to use.
What this means for you as a Mamut user is that you don’t need to do anything other than follow the Mamut installation wizard, unless you wish to use a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 other than the Express Edition which comes with Mamut. All data and saved information from earlier versions of Mamut will automatically be transferred to the SQL database and you will start and use the system exactly as before.
As part of the transition to the SQL database, some of the database tools have been moved over from Mamut into a separate program: Mamut DataTools. Backup will still be accessible in the application as before by going to File/Backup.
NB! Updating from earlier versions of Mamut to version 12 requires version 11.1 or 11.2 of Mamut to be installed. If you have version 11.0 or earlier, you should first update to version 11.2 or contact Mamut Support Centre before updating to version 12 of Mamut.
Options with other versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Mamut Business Software is supplied with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, which is a powerful database server which is distributed free of charge by Microsoft together with Mamut Business Software. Mamut Business Software may also be used with other, more powerful versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. These offer a variety of other properties and advantages compared with the Express Edition, which installations with many users or very comprehensive databases will benefit from.
If your requirements exceed the limits of the Express Edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2005, we recommend the Workgroup or Standard versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. The limits of Express are:
- Max size of database 4 GB per company database (documents/files saved in the Document Register in Mamut Business Software are not included in this figure)
- Only 1 CPU/1 Core used for SQL server
- Only 1 GB RAM used for SQL server

The limit of 4 GB per database applies per company database in Mamut.

Mamut and Microsoft can offer various versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. When you buy SQL Server together with Mamut Business Software, we offer ISV licences at very competitive prices. ISV licences bought with Mamut may only be used for Mamut applications, such as Business Software, Mamut ServiceSuite, Mamut POS and Mamut Asset Register.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Mamut Business Software
Version 12 of Mamut Business Software only supports Microsoft SQL Server 2005. At a later stage we will produce a version that will also accommodate Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
